Weekly Motivational

So, I’m looking to do more recurring features. Writing and art is a constant process of finding inspiration and motivation to keep working, so once every week I intend to post a roundup of new things I’ve found that week that I find inspiring/artistic/generally neat.

Let’s see how this works, hmm?

Cool Nonsense 02/03/11

A friend of mine first introduced me to Karen Elson a few months ago, and though folk isn’t generally my favorite genre I must say I love her style. Her lyrics are unusually dark for folk music too, which I’m always a fan of. (according to iTunes, she’s “gothic-folk” – that’s a genre?) Not only do I dig the song, but the music video is a great combination of beautiful and eerie.
Also, apparently she started out as a model before moving on to a music career. A model at 16, and now a successful singer-songwriter?  Some people really need to save a little talent for the rest of us.

Seriously, it's like cheating at life.

Speaking of talented folks, I adore Guillermo Del Toro. Most well known for the movie Pan’s Labyrinth and the Hellboy films, he’s a jack of all trades for the film industry – everything from writing, makeup effects, production, and the monster designs he’s most well-known for.

Also, causing nightmares.

Earlier this week I found this neat little site, which is filled with his sketchbook designs for Pan’s Labyrinth. I personally love sketchbook shots like these, because they give a great window into the creative process, especially with industry professionals like Del Toro. It’s fascinating to see how simple doodles evolve into full creations. Also, pretty pictures.

(that site is a little awkward to navigate, so here’s some direct links)

While on the topic of random things I love, if you’ve had more than a five minute conversation with me you’ve probably noticed I have a teenytiny huge soft spot for steampunk. I also like pretty things and unusual fashion, so imagine my glee over finding Clockwork Couture.

If you’re the kind of oddball who also goes for things like petticoats, corsets, and from time to time ponders how practical those boots would be on the deck of an airship (high five!), this is right up your alley. If like me you also enjoy drawing these things, it’s an incredible resource for inspiration. (and wardrobe, if you feel like shaking things up a bit)

A few of my favorite things:

And that’s all for this week, kids. Tune in for more next Friday!
